Crazy mobile companies promise coverage in over 200 countries, only 195 actually exist

August 15th, 2010

Quick! How many countries are in the world?

It’s not something we think about every day, but the best answer for the number of countries in the world is 195.

Don’t tell that to Ma Bell though. Most of the Canadian cell phone companies promise coverage in “over 200″ countries. In the United States, it gets even worse.

Need proof? Let’s start with the Canadian companies, best known for having some of the highest profits and highest prices in the developed world.

Given that TELUS has already gone the extra mile with 5 extra countries, I’m not sure how they plan to add new roaming destinations.

As if most of the 200 countries can be reached by road from Canada!

Fido and Bell also make similar claims, while Rogers is conspicuously quiet with specific numbers on their web site. Maybe it’s because everyone knows they don’t really provide widespread coverage in any countries, including Canada.

In the United States, the empty promises get even weirder. Verizon has a page for  Antarctica, along with a useless coverage map!

I guess there’s no coverage in Antarctica, not even for the research bases.

Then there’s AT&T, an extra special American mobile carrier.

They are clearly the best, with coverage in over 25 imaginary countries that don’t exist.

While the definition of what a “country” is contested in some areas, most experts would agree there is only 195 countries give or take a few. Assuming all of the countries in the world actually have mobile roaming coverage, claims of 200 and 220 are definitely pushing it.

Video: A Tour of Saint John

August 5th, 2010

While home for a summer visit to Saint John, I did the usual tour of my favourite places. Tired of capturing just pictures, I created a video tour of the city. Hopefully you will enjoy it as much as I do. Sadly, I did not have enough time to include everything that I believe fully represents Saint John, but I hit on many of the areas that are important to me.

Enjoy!

Also check out some photos I took in a separate blog post.

Summer 2010 in Saint John

August 5th, 2010

While home in Saint John for a summer visit, I took photos around town as I usually do. I also created a video which I have entered in a separate blog post.

Here are some of my favourites:

I have probably taken this shot before in Rockwood Park, but I don’t care. It always looks beautiful.

From a fairly remote area of the park, I took this photo overlooking Lily Lake with a view of Uptown.

The St. John River as seen from UNBSJ is always a beautiful site.

The clock donated by Irving is a wonderful addition to the foot of King Street. The architecture of Brunswick House behind makes it even better.

Uptown during a work day is generally a quiet place when there are no tourists. These guys are always outside, though!

This view of Saint John Harbour reminds us that this is a working port, even though the major tourist attractions are not far away.

Check out the rest of my new photos from Saint John in my gallery. Also check out my Saint John tour video in my other blog post.

Robot Emotional Control Article on UNB.ca

July 21st, 2010

An article about me has appeared on the front page of the UNB web site regarding my Robot Emotional Control project.

As you may remember, my project received a lot of attention last year. Although I have since moved onto other projects as well, I continue to work with robots that aim to act more appropriately around people.

Video: New York City

July 15th, 2010

In addition to my photo galleries, I made a video for New York City which includes video clips that I took. Mixed in are some photos that you may have already seen if you followed my previous blog posts. Enjoy!

Central Park – New York City (7 of 7)

July 13th, 2010

On my last full day in New York, I went to Central Park.

When she was young, my mother had her picture taken near this Hans Christian Andersen monument. So I did the same!

A beautiful bridge spans part of the lake that I rowed in with my friend Roddy.

Many New Yorkers love to relax here, as tall buildings loom over in the distance.

Trees are everywhere and contrast sharply with the tall buildings that you can find everywhere else in New York City.

Pathways snake all through the park. Sadly, we only had time to see part of the park.

I stand in front of one of the lakes. As evening drew near, it got quite cold, and I was not wearing anything warm.

This concludes my photo highlights from my trip. Be sure to check out my gallery which contains all of my favourite photos.

Check back soon for a video I compiled from this trip as well that I am still working on.

Empire State Building & Brooklyn Bridge – New York City (6 of 7)

July 12th, 2010

The city is a sea of bright lights at night. This view is from the top of the Empire State Building.

Another view from the top of the Empire State Building.

Cars drive under Brooklyn Bridge. So many movies and TV shows set in New York include this bridge in some way.

We only walked across part of the bridge. Walking the entire distance takes quite a while!

That’s all for now. Be sure to check out my gallery!
