The spring weather is now here, so it’s been a great time to explore the streets and parks of Calgary. I’ve tried to check out a variety of locations at all times of the day. Here are my favourites! Continue reading
Earlier this year, I had the chance to visit Toronto again. I explored the Yonge Street and Dundas Square area at nighttime, which I think is one of the busier areas of Toronto. Continue reading
Winter visits Calgary several times each year with short bursts of cold weather bringing snow and minus 30 degree temperatures. It can be an unpleasant time to explore the city, but also a rewarding one for photographers! Here are some of the favourite photos of the season.
Many parts of Calgary become quiet at night, but parts of the urban landscape come alive with beautiful colours and lights, especially when it is foggy.
A few weeks ago, I hiked near Lake Louise to the Lake Agnes Tea House. This 2 hour hike takes you high above Lake Louise and offers stunning views, as you can see below.
The Lake Agnes Tea House itself was one of the highlights of the hike, due to its history. The tea house has been operating since 1905, and does not have any electricity. The staff live at the tea house when it is open from June to October. A helicopter brings in some of the dry goods at the start of the season, while staff hike fresh supplies up 2-4 times per week! Stephen Avenue is Calgary’s only pedestrian mall, and is one of the city’s most vibrant streets at all hours of the day. It is home to major shopping centres, including a Hudson’s Bay department store which has recently opened its own restaurant with a bar and patio. Most downtown streets are named numerically (e.g., 1 Street SE), but the title Stephen Avenue is used to describe a portion of 8th Avenue.
I’d like to share a few of my favourite photos taken on Stephen Avenue at night over the past year. Continue reading
On October 9th of last year, Calgary was dazzled with a sunset so incredible that people stepped out of their houses to take pictures. The city is always quite beautiful during the evening hours, but this sunset was very different. Everything around the city seemed to glow.
From my balcony, I was able to capture a stunning photo of the city skyline which I previously shared on social media (including Instagram). The attention it received makes that image one of my most popular ever.
In this post, I would also like to share several other photos taken that day which show the Rocky Mountains in the distance, and other parts of Calgary’s downtown and Beltline neighbourhood skylines. Everything looked incredible in these lighting conditions. Continue reading
Barrier Lake is a beautiful and easily accessible man-made lake, created by the damming of the Kannanaskis River. The Rocky Mountains offer many beautiful vistas outside of Calgary, but Barrier Lake is particularly close, and easily accessible at all times of the year.
The river is quite active with kayakers and boaters. I was fortunate to see some of them during one of my visits. Even when the lake is frozen over during winter, the snow and the mountains are still worth seeing. I hope you enjoy a few of my favourite photos from this location. Continue reading
